What I worked on

August 21: We’ve been frantically working towards the finishing line for launch of business21c.com.au. Due to unforeseen and tragic circumstances, launch has been put back from Wednesday August 26th to September 10, when there will be a high profile public launch of the site at a panel debate with Giam Swiegers of Deloitte and David Murray of the Future Fund. If you’d like to come to the launch, please get in touch with me. It is all extremely exciting.

August 3: Finalising interviews on the future of business education for Boss; editing dozens of video clips for new website; editting boardroom report on auditing for Deloitte; going up the coast for a surf with Buzz and Barney, on Thursday.

May 28: If the Mike Hanley Freelance Business Index is any kind of lead indicator, the GFC is well behind us and the global economy is about to skyrocket. I’m working on a white paper on retirement benefits for Towers Perrin out of Chicago, a risk management publication - the Director’s Series for Marsh out of Singapore, story ideas for Forbes Asia, a private equity piece for Ernst & Young here in Sydney, and a few other bits and pieces. Fix your mortgage and buy equities.

May 20: Ah what a difference a week makes. GFC over. Now busy working on a series of executive briefings for the multinational clients of insurance broker Marsh in Asia. Writing copy for a research report commissioned by the Coca-Cola Retail Research Council in Asia. Interviewing ANZ Asia CEO for CFO piece, as well as the usual book reviews and profiles for Boss. Enough time-wasting updating this website thingummy time to get on with it.

April 21: Have decided to get serious about blogging so have renamed my blog page “WorkLife” and will be writing 500 words a day on work, life, business, finance, strategy, whatever. On weekdays. Comments and feedback please.

March 25: A piece on insurance-linked securities for Swiss Re New York, book reviews for Boss, still working on mid-life crisis piece for Sunday Life. Depressed blokes please call.

February 25: Working on a feature on accounting fraud for CFO Asia, a survey report on green technology and a development brief for a new audio-content website.

February 6: This has been rather a long week. I’ve been interviewing partners of a big accountancy firm on the role of audit in the capital markets for a big report, and am now in the middle of writing it. I’m finishing off a report on Distressed Asset Investing in Australia. And I’m now doing the book reports for Boss magazine, reading and writing about the nature of leadership, social networking, and “Changeabilty”.

January 22: In addition to reports on Maintaining Confidence in the Capital Markets and Distressed Asset Investing in Australia I’m also researching a story on the return of innovation to the capital markets, and writing a piece on Better Place, the electric car company which has just appointed a high profile Victorian politician to run its Australian operations. All this in >30 degree humid weather with no air conditioning. Get me out of here.

January 12: Back at my desk after a simply amazing trip. Exitted Fiji on the last plane out before the hurricane flooded the entire country. January’s projects include articles on how to protect against customer bankruptcy, the market for distressed debt, the role of audit in maintaining confidence in the capital markets, and how the capital markets will look in 2011.

What I'm working on

February 4: I haven't updated this panel since October 24. That's totally out of order, but in my defense, worklife has been exceedingly hectic of late. I have just come down the mountains from the World Economic Forum in Davos, at which I was employed to write summaries of the sessions. It was a hugely exciting affair to be a part of and an immense privilege to be in such close proximity to such a large pool of the world's top talent. But not nearly as exciting as everything that is going on at Business 21c. Check it out.
